‘The Shape of Water’ Trailer: Showcases a unique Cold War-Era love story

Guillermo del Toro hasn’t gotten the money he needs to make the project he loves. With two of his recent bid budget projects going on without him in Hellboy and Pacific Rim. So it really seems that Guillermo is going back to the type of stories he loves to tell and what him the director he is.

Now today a studio that I absolutely admire in Fox Searchlight, they have put out the first trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Shape of Water. The film centers around a lonely mute woman (Sally Hawkins). She is hired to clean up a top secret government facility. The facility harbors a secret aquatic creature that lives entirely underwater. One time while cleaning the facility their paths cross and her life is forever changed. The two go on a journey that is teased ever so slightly in the trailer.

This trailer gets me really excited. I really enjoyed Crimson Peak it seems that Guillermo really does his best work in things he really loves and it seems like Shape of Water falls into that category.  The fact that this has a love story at the heart of it fits perfectly and the cross species aspect of it will be very interesting to see just how it plays out. Micheal Shannon seems to be playing a very unhinged mad scientist type of person. The trailer does a beautiful job of transition of a love story by using its beautiful French music then transitioning to a horror thriller vibe. And as to most trailer nowadays give away too much and this one does a good job of teasing us while keeping its cards close to the vest.

Shape of Water opens up on December 8th and stars Octavia Spencer, Richard Jenkins, Micheal Stuhlbarg, and Doug Jones.
