J.J. Abrams was able to construct a cool and interesting universe with the Cloverfield with keeping the project under wraps and it is just brought out of nowhere upon an audience. With the original Cloverfield being a cool found footage monster movie, then the follow-up 10 Cloverfield Lane just came out of nowhere and was a great claustrophobic film. Genre films have always had a hard time to find their way into the awards conversation with the exception to very few Sci-Fi and Fantasy films. But right now Arrival has been forcing its way into the awards contention, spearheaded by Amy Adams spectacular performance. But next year, Denis Villeneuve hopes to replicate it with Blade Runner 2049.
